PURPOSE: A method and system for an explicit multicast receivability test and an explicit multicast reachability test is provided to carry out the explicit multicast receivability test and explicit multicast reachability test of a host in an explicit multicast network without the necessity of adding a new signal packet. CONSTITUTION: A sender end(410) sends a receivability probe packet(400) in order to confirm the explicit multicast receivability test of a receiver end(450). The receivability probe packet(400) arrives at the receiver end(450) through normal unicast routing via generic routers(420-440). In case that the receiver end(450) can understand and receive the receivability probe packet(400), the receiver end(450) passes the received probe packet(400) to an explicit multicast processing block. However, if the receiver end(450) cannot understand or cannot receive the receivability probe packet(400), the receiver end(450) transmits a protocol arrival impossible message to the sender end(410). Based on the protocol arrival impossible message, the sender end(410) confirms that the receiver end(450) has no explicit multicast receivability.
