[Also in Division C5] A catalyst composition for use in the preparation of cis 1, 4-hexadienes by the co-dimerisation of ethylene and a conjugated diolefin comprises the reaction product of an organic or inorganic iron compound and an organometallic compound of the formula MR wherein M is Li, Na or K and R is an alkyl aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The molar ratio of the iron compound to the organometallic compound may be from 2 to 10. Examples of catalyst compositions specified are iron triacetylacetonate/ n BuLi, Fe Cl 3 / n BuLi, and iron triacetylacetonate/sodium naphthenate; the catalyst composition is prepared and used in solution in an organic solvent, for example an alkane, an arene or an ether. |
