The speed of a fan used to cool another piece of equipment, such as a computer, is controlled by adjusting the amount of power fed to the fan. The speed of the fan is adjusted synchronously along with the load power of the equipment that it is cooling, such that the fan is supplied with more power and rotates more quickly if the equipment that it is cooling is operating at a high power, vice versa. The controller for the fan detects a power signal from the equipment being cooled and converts this signal into a voltage signal, which is then compared with a reference voltage. The result of this comparison is used to control the power fed to the fan by directing the current through a combination of two transistors and a resistor. |
