PURPOSE: Provided is a process for producing 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy benzyl alcohol used as an antioxidant and an agent for treating skin diseases or virus infection by using 4-methyl-2-pentanol as a solvent. CONSTITUTION: The 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy benzyl alcohol is produced by reacting 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol and para-formaldehyde in the equivalent ratio of 1:1.2-1:1.5 in the presence of a basic catalyst in the 4-methyl-2-pentanol solvent at 10-20deg.C and then precipitating by using n-heptane, wherein the amount of the 4-methyl-2-pentanol solvent is 1-2 times based on the total weight of the 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol and the para-formaldehyde. The basic catalyst is selected from the group consisting of potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium methoxide, and potassium carbonate.
