A respiratory apparatus which has the effect of mitigating atelectasis comprises an inhalation conduit 1 for supplying nutrient gas to a patient, an exhalation conduit 27, 25, a first exhalation valve 31, a by-pass conduit 26 with a second exhalation valve 33 which operates at a higher exhalation pressure than said first valve, and a counting mechanism arranged to count changes in pressure phases in the inhalation conduit and to maintain said first valve closed during an exhalation phase after a number of pressure phase changes, thereby to cause exhalation through said second exhalation valve. The counting mechanism may comprise a diaphragm 18, a toothed bar 20, a ratchet wheel 21 and a cam 22. |
