1,078,985. Extracting germ from maize. OCRIM S.p.A. April 14, 1965, No. 15946/65. Heading A2Q. A method of extracting germ from maize comprises subjecting the maize kernels to a breaking process to produce a mixture of germ grains, endosperm fragments, meal, bran and unbroken kernels, separating the components of the mixture by difference of geometrical dimensions to produce a stream consisting substantially of germ grains and endosperm fragments and then separating the germ from the endosperm by the difference of densities. Breaker 1 breaks maize supplied by hopper 7, and separates most of the brain and meal which are passed to sifter 2, from the mixture which is passed to sifter 2<SP>1</SP>. Sifter 2<SP>1</SP> produces four streams, two consisting substantially of germ grains and endosperm fragments, and one each of unbroken kernels, and bran and meal. The unbroken kernels are returned to breaker 1. The aspirators 3, 3<SP>1</SP> receive the germ and endosperm streams and remove any remaining bran therefrom. The germ grains and endosperm fragments are then separated from each other by density tables 4, 4<SP>1</SP>. Dust is removed from sifter 2<SP>1</SP>, aspirators 3, 3<SP>1</SP> and density tables 4, 4<SP>1</SP> by fan 6 to cyclone dust collector 5. |
