A scanner (12) operated by a writing implement scans coordinates of the writing and/or the writing pressure during writing. A control circuit (18) converts the output of the scanner into digital data characterizing the writing. The scanner has a scanning surface (14) in the form of an underlying writing pad, and markings (16) for positioning a document correctly on the pad. The markings may be detected through the document visually or by touch. A method of electronically detecting writing is also claimed.
