PURPOSE: To compensate optical response characteristics of a liquid crystal panel with high precision while reducing capacity of a reference table memory. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display device is constructed so that representative gray scale levels are extracted and set at close intervals in the gray scale transition areas where the optical response characteristics of the liquid crystal panel 4 are poor, while the representative gray scale levels are extracted and set at dispersed intervals in the gray scale transition areas where the optical response characteristics of the liquid crystal panel 4 are relatively good and each of the extracted and set representative gray scale levels are allotted to the respective addresses of an OS table. At write gray scale determining part 2, referring to compensation signal data stored corresponding to combinations of the respective representative gray scale levels, the write gray scale data to the liquid crystal panel 4 are determined. Thereby the optical response characteristics of the liquid crystal panel 4 are compensated with high precision.
