Synthetic resins &c. rendered adherent to liquids such as aqueous or other printing inks, by subjecting their surfaces, directly or through an unaffected medium, to friction applied for example by a hand-held pad or a rotating felt, silicone or rubber pad, disc or roller. Resinous &c. materials specified are p-olefines such as polythene and polyproylene, styrene, vinyl and vinylidene polymers and copolymers, acrylic and methacrylic polymers, polyamides, polyesters, polyurethanes, regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, and incompletely cured phenol-, urea- and melamineformaldehyde resins. The friction may be applied through a layer of P.T.F.E. or regenerated cellulose, subsequently removed, and the materials may be supported on a plane base or on a patterned or embossed base the pattern of which is then repeated in their surface adhesion to printing inks &c. Friction may be enhanced by the use of water, aqueous liquids, a chlorinated hydrocarbon, or solid particles e.g. of carbon, sulphur, talc or iron or other metal filings. The friction may also be applied under water, or accompanied by the application of an electrostatic field or H.F. heating. Examples include the frictioning of polythene, p.v.c. and polypropylene followed by the application of water- or alcohol-based acrylic ink or dye which, after drying, is found to be firmly adhered at the parts frictioned. |
