PURPOSE: A device and a method for detecting abnormality of recorded signals are provided to detect abnormality of recorded signals by testing data format or comparing an envelope voltage of the recorded signals with a reference voltage instead of using any additional recording head. CONSTITUTION: A device for detecting abnormality of recorded signals includes a plurality of heads, a control part for controlling the heads, and a discrimination part for determining the abnormality generation of recorded signals by comparison with signals played from a recording medium with a predetermined reference signal. First and second heads record data to the recording medium respectively in first and second recording modes. The control part controls the second head to play the data recorded by the first head in the first mode at the same time of the first head's recording(S20,S30). The discrimination part determines whether data format of at least a part of the signals played from the medium is normal and determines the malfunction of the head on the basis of the comparison result between the played signals and the predetermined reference signal(S40,S70).
