Shaped medicinal compositions comprise a hard candy base, an effective amount of a medicinal agent normally insoluble in the hard candy base, and an alkali metal or calcium cyclamate in an amount sufficient to solubilize the medicinal agent. The latter may be acetyl p-aminophenol or salicylamide. The composition may also include antibacterial agents, e.g. benzethonium chloride, cetyl diethyl benzylammonium chloride or cetyl ethyl dimethylammonium chloride; local anaesthetics, e.g. ethyl p-amino benzoate; neomycin sulphate, zinc bacitracin or tyrothricin, together with flavoring agents. Hard candy medicated lozenges may be made by preparing a candy base comprising sugar and water, adding the medicinal and solubilizing agents thereto, adding glucose, reducing the volume of the mixture at elevated temperature to form a molten medicated candy base, colouring and flavoring, cooling, and forming lozenges.
