The growth of young animals e.g. chickens, pigs, calves and, generally, animals bred for meat, hide or fur, is stimulated by addition of tannin to the basal diet. The tannin may be from chestnut, myrobalan, quebracho, mimosa, vallonia or oak; a suitable preparation is the spray dried, hot water extract of chestnut wood shavings. The tannin substance may form 0.05-3% of the feed, and may be incorporated in the foodstuff in the form of powder, paste, solution or emulsion. The tannin is preferably obtained by extracting chestnut wood shavings with hot water, decanting, clarifying and concentrating the solution; either the concentrated solution is used or it may be dessicated e.g. by atomizing to produce a dry powder. |
