[Also in Division G1] A programmed cock for use with a leak detecting mass spectrometer and an auxiliary preexhaust pump has a spherical plug 11 provided with an axial cavity 14 and radial ports 34, 35 and rotatable by a handle 21 to connect port 3 to either port 4 or 5, or to close the cock. The port 3 is adapted to be connected to the apparatus to be tested while the ports 4, 5 are adapted to be connected to the mass spectrometer and exhaust pump respectively and each have a sleeve 25, 31 slidably sealed in the port and biased into contact with the plug by spring washers 28, 30. The cock is normally in the closed position in which a roller 38 on a transverse pin 36 fixed in the plug acts on a valve 40 to hold the latter open against the loading of spring washers 43 to exhaust the plug cock cavity 2 to atmosphere via filter 47. Movement of the cock through 90 degrees connects the apparatus to the pre-exhaust pump and after a required vacuum is achieved the plug is rotated a further 90 degrees to connect the apparatus to the mass spectrometer. If the leakage is large the plug is moved to an intermediate position with the ports 34, 35 connected to both ports 4 and 5.</p> |
