PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the inadvertent selection of the focus detection region not desired by a user by forming a region where the focus detection region is not selected when a second decision range is set at the time of the second and subsequent focus detection operations. SOLUTION: Only the x-axis coordinates in the horizontal direction of the line of sight is used for the first selection of the line of sight detection. A central distance measurement point 7C is elected if the coordinates (x, y) on the finder of the detected line of sight are -x1<=x<=x1. The left side distance measurement point 7L is selected if -x2<=x<=-x1. The right side distance measurement point 7R is selected if x1<=x<=x2. The central distance measurement point 7C is selected if -x1<=x<=x1 and -y1<=y<=y1. The left side distance measurement point 7L is selected if -x2<=x<=-x1 and -y1<=y<=y1.
