PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fast and continuously read a plurality of originals while feeding the paper of the documents without providing a large-capacity memory only for special image processing that needs a memory of large capacity. SOLUTION: When image processing of an original that is currently read is special image processing that needs the large-capacity memory, a first read mode is selected for once stopping the next original on an original transporting path before reading the next original and then starting to read the original is selected. In the case of normal image processing that does not need the large-capacity memory, a second reading mode is selected for starting to read the next original without stopping on the original transporting path before reading the next original.
