PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve starting performance of an engine and reduce fuel consumption and emission at the time of starting. SOLUTION: In an engine comprising variable valve system continuously changing the lift amount of an air intake valve together with the operation angle, at the time of starting when the engine rotation speed Ne is below a predetermined speed NeS, a lift amount for starting corresponding to a cooling water temperature Tw at that time is set and the variable valve system is controlled to make the engine to have the lift amount for starting. The lift amount for starting is set as the minimum lift amount for securing necessary air amount for starting and is set to be larger as the cooling water temperature Tw is lower.
