A process for cutting textiles which contain plastic fibres, comprises using a laser to cut along a predetermined pattern. The laser can be deflected and focussed as required. The cutting unit comprises a laser source, a motor driven deflector mirror unit, a motor driven focussing unit, and a control unit. The laser source is fixed, and the deflecting mirror unit consists of two mirrors which can be swiveled in two perpendicular planes.
