<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the conventional problem wherein information on an object to be read cannot be read accurately because the same paper surface is recognized as different images depending on the direction of incident light. <P>SOLUTION: An image reader comprises a light emitting device 11 for irradiating the surface of a paper 15 with light in an oblique direction, and an area sensor 13 for reading the irradiated area as an image, and reads information on the paper 15 from the read results.
