<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable, highly durable silicon/silicon carbide composite part with improved durability and mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, etc., at a low production cost. <P>SOLUTION: The manufacturing process comprises a step wherein a molded product, which comprises silicon carbide and carbon and has a size larger than the final size, is impregnated with molten silicon and a step wherein the surface layer of the molded product impregnated with the molten silicon is shaved off through machining to obtain the part of the final size. The obtained silicon/silicon carbide composite part shows no sintering shrinkage and therefore can be green processed into a size close to that of a final product, thus improving productivity. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
