PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus where transfer from an image carrier to a recording medium or an intermediate transfer body or transfer from the intermediate transfer body to the recording medium is very efficiently performed by weakening the adhesive force of toner particles to the image carrier in a transfer part. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus for forming an image by transferring a toner image from the image carrier 1 moving in a specified moving direction while carrying the toner image to the recording medium and fixing the transferred toner image on the recording medium is provided with a transfer member 5 applying transfer bias while coming into contact with the recording medium 8 passing in a state where it is superposed on the surface of the image carrier 1, and is equipped with a transfer part 40 transferring the toner image carried by the image carrier 1 to the recording medium 8, and a driving part 31 reciprocating the transfer member 5 in the width direction of the image carrier 1.
