PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of improving the properties such as wear resistance, oxidation resistance, toughness and breakage resistance of a hard sintering material used for a cutting tool, a wear resistant tool, and sliding parts requiring the increase of a service life and the improvement of performance. SOLUTION: The titanium-aluminum compound sintered compact consisting of a bonded phase of iron group metal, the nitride of aluminum, a dispersed phase consisting of the nitride and oxide of aluminum, and a hard phase having a composition of (Ti, Al)(C, N, O) has excellent wear resistance, breakage resistance, chipping resistance, oxidation resistance, and sliding properties. In the production method, a powdery mixture of titanium nitride, aluminum, and iron group metal is subjected to sintering and HIP (Hot Isostatic Press) treatment in a nonoxidizing high temperature atmosphere.
