A novel ionic liquid osmium oxide usable safely on an industrial scale and reusable which is osmium oxide dissolved in a solution of a compound represented by the general formula [1]: [1] (wherein R<1> and R<2> each independently represents C1-4 alkyl); an oxidizing agent comprising the osmium oxide; and a process for producing a diol compound, characterized by causing the oxidizing agent and a cooxidizing agent to act on a compound having a reactive double bond.
