A hand protection for a kayak paddle has a shaped fitting (12) slid onto the shaft (10) of the paddle and secured by a friction fit (18, 22). The fitting has a large diameter (12) at the paddle end and a tapering shape (14) at the other end. The large diameter protects the hand from contacting underwater obstructions while performing an Eskimo roll. The fitting is especially useful for when teaching inexperienced canoeists.
