<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a translucent reflection type liquid crystal display device which is improved in lightness of display, specially, in a transmission mode and has superior visibility. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 10 is a translucent reflection type liquid crystal display device which has a liquid crystal layer 16 sandwiched between a top substrate 14 and a bottom substrate 13 and is provided with a translucent reflecting layer 18 on the bottom substrate 13 and a back light 12 outside the bottom substrate 13. Then an upper polarizer 36 is provided on the external surface side of the top substrate 14 and a lower polarizer 28 is provided on the external surface side of the bottom substrate 13; and a phase difference layer 20 having a phase shift of 1/4 wavelength and a protection layer 21 are provided successively only in a reflection display area R on the internal surface side of the bottom substrate 13. Here, the phase shift of the liquid crystal layer 16 in a transmission display area T when no voltage is applied is set to 1/2 wavelength and the phase shift of the liquid crystal layer 16 in the reflection display area R is set to 1/4 wavelength. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
