PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem on the performance degradation of a polarizing plate caused by the increase of the thermal load of the polarizing plate arranged on the incident side or the emitting side of a picture display element. SOLUTION: The picture display device is provided with: color separation means DM1 and DM2 for separating illuminating light to a plurality of color light beams; a plurality of picture display elements 9R, 9G and 9B for respectively modulating a plurality of color light beams; and a color synthesizing means 11 for combining a plurality of color light beams modulated by the picture display elements so as to realize color picture display. The polarizing plates 8RI, 8RG and 8RB each obtained by sticking a polarizing element to a transparent base plate are arranged on the incident surface sides and the emitting surface sides of the picture display elements in the respective optical paths of a plurality of color light beams. The thickness of the transparent base plate arranged on the incident surface side of the picture display element is made larger than that of the transparent base plate arranged on the emitting surface side in at least one of the plurality of optical paths.
