PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the formation of Cl<SB>2</SB>or the like at the time of start of the operation of an electrically deionizing apparatus to suppress the deterioration of an ion exchanger or an ion exchange membrane. SOLUTION: The electrically deionizing apparatus is equipped with an anode chamber 17 having an anode 11, a cathode chamber 18 having a cathode 12, and concentration chambers 15 and desalting chambers 16 alternately formed by alternately arranging a plurality of anion exchange membranes 13 and cation exchange membranes 14 between the anode chamber 17 and the cathode chamber 18. When deionized water is produced with the electrically deionizing apparatus wherein the desalting chambers 16 are packed with an ion exchanger and the concentration chambers 15 are packed with an ion exchanger, activated carbon or an electric conductor, a voltage build-up speed at the time of start of the operation of the electrically deionizing apparatus is set to 0.02 V/cell/min or less.
