A process for preparation of nanocellular polymer foams of cell size 1 micron or below, by:(a) dissolution of the polymer in a sublimable solvent, where, (b) cooling of the polymer solution within at most 2 seconds to a temperature below the m.pt. of the solvent to give a frozen mixture, and (c) removal of the frozen solvent by freeze drying, giving the required nanocellular polymer foam is new Independent claims are included for: (1) a nanocellular polymer foam of cell size 1 micron or less obtained as above; (2) a shaped part obtained from nanocellular polymer foam as above; (3) a process for preparation of the shaped part from nanocellular particles obtained by adhesive bonding with an adhesive.
