The illumination device has groups of light-emitting diodes (1,2,3,4) mounted on a carrier, the 4 light-emitting diodes in each group positioned at the corners of a square, to provide spaces between the side edges of the adjacent light-emitting diodes for output of the emitted light (11). Each light-emitting diode group can be positioned on a sub-mount (5) with a square surface, the light-emitting diodes aligned with its diagonals, with a reflector (7) around the outside of the sub-mount.
