PURPOSE: An optical mouse and a method for preventing an error of the same are provided to prevent the optical mouse from outputting a wrong movement value due to operation of the optical mouse when the optical mouse is separated from a surface of a table. CONSTITUTION: An image sensor(41) comprises hundreds of pixels and outputs a signal accumulated for a predetermined time by one pixel unit. An A/D(Analog/Digital) converter(42) converts the output of the image sensor into a digital signal. An image data processor(43) receives and operates the output of the A/D converter, and calculates the movement value of the optical mouse. A system controller(44) controls timing with the outside, and receives and outputs the output of the image data processor. An average calculator(45) calculates an average by receiving the output of the A/D converter. A pickup state discriminator(46) receives the output of the average calculator and generates a pickup state signal. A multiplexer(47) outputs the movement value by multiplexing and receiving the output of the system controlling under control of the pickup state signal.
