摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently transmit image data to an external device and to improve the reliability of data transmission in an image pickup device. <P>SOLUTION: A communication configuration discriminating part 32 discriminates a data communication configuration between a data communicating part 30 and the external device 2. A compression rate setting part 40 specifies the compression rates that corresponds to the data communication configuration discriminated by the communication configuration discriminating part 32 and sets the compression rates in a compressing part 22. The compressing part 22 applies compression processing based on the set compression rate to image data of a transmission object. The compressed image data are given to the data communicating part 30 and transmitted to the external device 2. The data amount of the image data to be transmitted is adjusted in accordance with the data communication configuration by compressing the image data of the transmission object with the compression rate corresponding to the data communication configuration in this way to make it possible to perform efficient data transmission and highly reliable data transmission. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
