PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical device which makes images or characters etc., displayed on the peripheral of an image display region easily recognizable even when the these images etc., overlap on a peripheral region and which displays the easily visible images by suppressing the generation of a density difference between the peripheral region and the image display region. SOLUTION: The electro-optical device having data electrodes and scanning electrodes extending in a direction where these electrodes intersect with each other and pixel sections disposed in correspondence to these intersection regions is provided with Y-direction dummy electrodes along the data electrodes. The selection voltage applied to the scanning electrodes among these electrodes and the first voltage applied to the Y-direction dummy electrodes have a relation, as shown in Figure, with a polarity inversion signal and more particularly the polarity inversion timing of the first voltage and the polarity inversion timing of the data voltage are parted by a prescribed period INT.
