PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an L-amino acid in high yield from anα-keto acid by amino group transfer reaction. SOLUTION: An L-amino acid (e.g. L-glutamic acid) is produced by reacting anα-keto acid (e.g.α-ketoglutaric acid) with anα,ω-diaminoalkane (e.g. 1,5-diaminopentane) in the presence of anω-aminotransferase (e.g. an enzyme having a substrate specificity modified by genetic engineering means and produced by substituting the 30th threonine residue from the N-terminal of anω-aminotransferase derived from a hyperthermophilic microorganism, Pyrococcus furiosus).
