PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drastically alleviate a constraint of viscosity to conventional glass that glass which is easily devitrified cannot be formed; and to easily form special glass having a high devitrifying temperature, which is used as a substrate for a flat-panel display or an information recording medium. SOLUTION: A glass ribbon GR is formed from a formed body 12 formed by an overflow fusion method. The force loaded on a low viscosity glass ribbon part in the vicinity of the lower edge part of the formed body 12 can be made weak by pulling the glass ribbon GR downward via a noncontact supporting member 14 which supports a middle portion of the glass ribbon GR in the noncontact state through a gaseous thin layer 32. Thereby, it becomes possible to prevent rapid elongation of the glass ribbon GR caused by own gravity or the pulling force even when glass having viscosity of≤30,000 poise at the devitrifying temperature is formed by the overflow fusion method.
