<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-wavelength light source which can output broadband light with a flat intensity distribution of light and which can reduce the manufacturing cost and the running cost. <P>SOLUTION: The light source is provided with an input light source 1, a broadband waveguide 2 connected to the input light source 1, a nonreciprocal circuit 3 laid in the broadband waveguide 2, and a light emitting part 4 disposed at the end of the broadband waveguide 2. The broadband waveguide 2 is provided with a structure comprising optical couplers 5a, 5b to input excitation light and excitation light sources 6a, 6b connected to the optical couplers 5a, 5b, respectively, to supply the excitation light. The broadband waveguide 2 shows normal dispersion and flat dispersion characteristics and has a given amplification gain due to added erbium. Light pulses having a parabolic profile are transmitted through the broadband waveguide 2 by the effects of self phase modulation, wavelength dispersion and optical amplification to output broadband light with a flat intensity distribution. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
