PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent which can form a liquid crystal alignment layer having preferable liquid crystal aligning property, keeping a preferable state of liquid crystal alignment without decreasing electric characteristics such as a voltage holding rate even in a severe environment with irradiation of light or high temperature or even after driving for a long time, and hardly producing an afterimage, and to provide a method for forming a liquid crystal alignment film by using the aligning agent. CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent can be formed into a film on a substrate by coating and can form an inorganic film. For example, the liquid crystal aligning agent contains a partially hydrolyzed/condensed product or the like of a tungsten compound having an alkoxy group, a molybdenum compound or a niobium compound. The method for forming the liquid crystal alignment film is carried out by applying the above agent on a substrate to form a film and impacting the surface of the film by, for example, ion bean irradiation. |
