PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material for disk brakes which can provide a high friction coefficient and has little amount of wear both for a rotor and a friction material in a high temperature range of not less than 300°C, in particular not less than 500°C. SOLUTION: The material is characterized by comprising 10-30 wt% of silicon carbide and also comprising any one of large grain graphite and boron nitride and/or any one or more of cryolite, potassium fluoride, iron sulfide, antimony sulfide and molybdenum disulfide.
