PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an image of interest in an image file using a method that imposes little processing load, regardless of the size of an input image. SOLUTION: For each predetermined block, spatial frequency information and chromaticity information are obtained from image data recorded by compressed recording and are used to search for an image of interest in the image data. The feature quantity of frequency components in a partial area is changed according to the size of an input image, whereby information including ac component information for each data block is obtained without advanced calculations and used to search for the image of interest in the image file.
