PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic cylinder simple in structure, small with impact absorbing capacity easily adjusted without being influenced by an operating fluid, and capable of effectively relieving impact at the collision of a piston and an end cover, at a low cost using a cushioning material, and to provide an impact relieving adjustment method. SOLUTION: This hydraulic cylinder is provided with a cylinder tube; end covers for closing both ends of the cylinder tube; the piston slidably disposed in the cylinder tube to partition an internal space; and the cushioning material disposed at either one of the opposed faces of the piston and end cover to relieve impact at the collision of the piston and end cover. The cushioning material is formed of a ring 10 of an elastic body, and the ring 10 is provided with a plurality of through holes parallel with the moving direction of the piston.
