PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner capable of preventing a chain from being loosened by acting a hydraulic pressure on a plunger fitted in a housing and projecting the plunger by a coiled spring to efficiently absorb an impact due to pulsation occurring on the chain and to prevent an excessive tension from acting on the chain. SOLUTION: In this tensioner, the plunger 2 is formed in a spline type, and cutout grooves 9, 9... are axially formed in the teeth 8 of a spline at equal intervals.
