PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent or reduce deformation of a subsystem having a steering wheel and a steering column that is caused by the forces acting on an occupant in the event of a crash. SOLUTION: An airbag module having an airbag is provided which is disposed between the steering wheel and the instrument panel of the vehicle. In the event of a crash, the airbag is deployed between the steering wheel and the instrument panel and, as a result, supports the steering wheel. The airbag is better positioned with respect to the occupant, since deformation of the steering wheel by the forces acting on the airbag is prevented or reduced. As a result, the forces acting on the steering wheel in the event of a crash are conducted away into the windshield (window section). In addition, contact of an occupant not wearing his or her seatbelt with the windshield is effectively prevented by suitably defining the size of the inflated airbag. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
