The invention provides a sterilization process which is not carried out in a vacuum, including the steps of introducing an oxidizing agent in a gaseous state into a sterilization chamber or area to be sterilized, and introducing gas plasma into the sterilization chamber or area to be sterilized. An apparatus for carrying out the process is disclosed.
