A technique of making a seamless in-line attenuator in optical fiber and attenuator made by the same are disclosed. The technique includes determining an initial offset (alpha) between the longitudinal axes (106, 108) of optical fibers (88, 98) to be spliced, as well as a heating time for making the splice. As the optical fibers are heated, the longitudinal centers of the optical fibers are pulled together to a second offset (beta) that is smaller than the first offset. The result is a splice having desired attenuation and significant tensile strength. |
