[Also in Division B1] Unsaturated aliphatic nitriles are obtained by contacting mixtures of the corresponding olefins with oxygen, ammonia and optional amounts of an inert gas in the vapour phase at a temperature of from 300‹ to 600‹ C. and in the presence of an oxidation catalyst comprising compounds of Mo and Co, Ni, Mo and Co, P, Bi and Mo, P, Bi, Mo and Ca, P and Mo, or Sn and Sb, said process also being carried out in the presence of, or said catalyst being previously treated with elemental sulphur and/or a sulphur-containing compound. Products are preferably acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. Preferred sulphur compounds are hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, thiophenes, mercaptans, sulphites or sulphonium compounds. |
