The present invention relates to a biomimetic membrane. Biological membrane proteins are incorporated into a co-polymer matrix to produce membranes (66) with a wide variety of functionalities. In one form of the invention, a biomimetic membrane comprises a block copolymer matrix simulating a natural biological membrane and natural protein environment. Membrane proteins are incorporated into the matrix to form a membrane/protein composite. Particular, two different membrane proteins are incorporated, which act in concert to create electricity from light.
