PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve corrosionproofness and recording resolution, increase the life and realize high density recording without loosing thermal stability regarding a perpendicular magnetic recording medium and its manufacturing method, and a patterned medium and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium is made by laminating a soft magnetic lining 2, a base layer 3, a magnetic recording layer 4, a nonmagnetic overcoat layer 5, a protective film 6, and a liquid lubricating later 7 in this order on a nonmagnetic base 1. The magnetic recording layer 4 is made of a rare earth-transition metal amorphous film. The nonmagnetic overcoat layer 5 consists of a metal selected from a group of Si, Ti, Ta, Cr, Mn, Mo and an alloy of two or more of them selected from this group. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
