PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device which is provided with a reflective hologram for guiding illuminating light to a display element and has a large observation pupil. SOLUTION: Illuminating light from a light emitting diode (12) being a light source is collimated to parallel rays by a convex lens (15), is diffracted and reflected by a reflective hologram (13), and is guided to a liquid crystal display device (11) being the display element, and light representative of an image from the liquid crystal display device is guided to an eye (E) by an ocular optical system (14). A diffusing property is given to the reflective hologram to convert the illuminating light to be guided to the liquid crystal display device into diffuse light, and thus a large observation pupil is realized as if it were provided with a surface light source (12i). The convex lens may be omitted by giving a positive optical power to the reflective hologram. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
