The locking device comprises a locking element (6) to prevent and permit use of the tool, a transceiver (8) for transmission of signals, and a separate transceiver carried by the user as an operating element (7). A coded signal is exchanged between the two transceivers. Only if a positive comparison of an exchanged signal is made is use of the tool authorized.
