The stapler base (2) has an upper part (6) which can be moved towards and away from a lower part (5) of the base. An elastic device (8) between the upper and lower parts can adopt a starting position with these two parts separated from each other so that the upper part presents a surface for supporting the sheets of paper to be stapled. This surface includes a cavity for receiving the staple arms (40, 41). The area beneath this cavity can be rotated about an axis. A catch mechanism fixes the elastic device in the starting position so that the upper part can not be moved downwards towards the lower part when the driver pushes a staple through the sheets. A release mechanism is provided for allowing the catch mechanism to be released when the driver pushes a staple into a position where the staple web (42) is in contact with the top sheet, following which the stapler head and the upper part of the stapler base are moved in the direction of the lower part of the base, causing the area beneath the cavity in the upper part to cooperate with the lower part and rotate in the direction of the upper part, which forces the staple arms (40, 41) to be pressed against the underside of the bottom sheet. |
