<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the expression of diversified performances possible with simple operations of an electronic musical instrument. <P>SOLUTION: The key touch forces in a plurality of directions including a vertical direction, lateral direction, transverse direction, etc., are detected by each of respective keys of a keyboard 12 and musical tone signals are generated according to the key touch forces in the vertical direction. In controlling musical tone characteristics according to the key touch forces in a plurality of directions, the weighting of the key touch forces in a plurality of the directions is controlled according to key touch speeds. When the musical tone signals are going to be generated in correspondence to the keys of the maximum key touch forces in the vertical direction, the musical tone signals are controlled according to the key touch forces etc., in the lateral direction of the keys of the second key touch forces in the vertical direction.
