PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an optical fiber preform by which the bend of a glass rod before being subjected to cladding layer deposition is reliably corrected and the degree of the core eccentricity of the glass rod can be suppressed, and to provide a method of correcting the bend of the glass rod. SOLUTION: The deviation amount of the glass rod 3 before the clad layer deposition is set to be≤1.0 mm over the whole length of the glass rod. When the deviation amount of the glass rod 3 becomes larger than 1.0 mm, the bend of the glass rod 3 is corrected. When the bend is corrected, it is preferable to stop heating of the bent part in the case when any of following conditions is satisfied: (1) the average load applied to an iron 5 from the glass rod 3 increases by a prescribed amount in comparison with the load before heating; (2) the fluctuation width of the height of the iron 5 fluctuating according to the rotation of the glass rod 3 has decreased to≤0.5 mm; and (3) a prescribed time corresponding to the average outer diameter of the glass rod 3 has lapsed.
